Going local secures key commercial benefits

One of smt’s latest clients is a major supplier to the security market. With requirements in excess of 80,000 boards per annum, the company’s experience of offshore suppliers had been problematic. Quality standards were poor, communication was difficult, turnaround slow. Switching to smt, in contrast, has helped secure a number of clear and quantifiable improvements. For example, smt is responsible for inventory management via the client’s intranet, ensuring that stock of key product lines is maintained at a level sufficient for between one and two month’s production. As a result, rapid response to market requirements has been combined with a reduction in inventory that has secured annual cost savings of around £750,000. Furthermore, a failure rate of less than 100 boards per annum represents a major improvement in quality, and has helped the company move into a position of market leadership.
